The Brompton G Line Electric: A Game-Changer
The Brompton G Line Electric is a game-changer for the British brand, taking their signature portability and pairing it with a beefier, more capable design and a brand new electrical drivetrain. Launched in late 2024, it’s billed as "the most versatile eBike in the world."

In a Nutshell
The Brompton Electric G Line is built for practical, everyday urban riding. The new 20” wheels greatly improve comfort and stability, and the Schwalbe G-One tyres open up new terrain such as light trails and canal towpaths. The rear motor delivers smooth, consistent power up to 15.5 mph. The removable 300Wh battery offers a decent 20-45 mile range. The G-Line is equipped with 4-speed gearing, integrated lights, a quick, compact fold, and, at last, powerful hydraulic disc brakes.
Design and Build: A Bigger, Bolder Brompton
I rode a non-electric single-speed titanium Brompton for 15 years, so I couldn’t wait to get hold of the new G-Line to test. Despite being a long-time Brompton fan, I had not been impressed by the front hub-motored C-Line electric. But I was eager to see what a rear hub-motored Brompton could do with bigger wheels and a significantly redesigned platform.
What a revelation! Ditching the Brompton’s traditional 16-inch wheels for larger 20-inch ones, and wrapping them in custom 54mm Schwalbe G-One Allround tubeless-ready tyres, makes a huge difference to ride feel, comfort, and security. This upgrade alone gives the G Line a more planted, full-size bike feel, smoothing out the ride over rougher terrain like gravel paths or uneven city streets.
Electric Performance: Power Meets Practicality
The G Line Electric sports a new 30Nm, 250 Watt rear-hub motor (peaking at 450W), a departure from the front-hub setups of earlier Brompton e-bikes. This rear-wheel drive offers far better traction and stability, especially on climbs or off-road, with three electrical assist levels to choose from.
The 345Wh battery, housed in a removable front bag, promises a 20-45 mile range, depending on assist level, terrain, and rider weight. Charging takes four hours from empty, and the Bluetooth-enabled app lets you tweak power modes, monitor battery life, and update the system wirelessly.
Ride Quality: Surprisingly Fun
On the road, the G Line Electric feels nippy and responsive, with the bigger wheels and wider tyres soaking up bumps far better than its 16-inch siblings. The motor kicks in smoothly, making short work of inclines, while the hydraulic disc brakes (140mm front, 160mm rear) provide confident stopping power—a first for Brompton and a big upgrade over rim brakes.
Practicality: Versatility with Added Anti-Theft Security
The G Line is loaded with commuter-friendly features: mudguards, a rear rack, and mounting points for bottles and Brompton’s front luggage system. Folded, it’s still compact enough to stow indoors or on public transport. Many Fully Charged customers have been drawn to the Brompton for its "under the desk storage" security, making it a stylish, versatile, and fun way to avoid bike theft.
Price and Value
Starting at £3,499, the G Line Electric is a premium buy. You’re paying for Brompton’s build quality, the seamless fold, and a 7-year frame warranty, all handmade in London. It’s a long-term investment, and with a dealer like Fully Charged—fully tooled up to maintain your Brompton—it will prove to be a durable and wise purchase.
