Meet the Tern GSD Gen3 – The Market-Leading Family Cargo Bike, Refined

Since its debut in 2017, the Tern GSD – short for Getting Stuff Done (or Getting Sh!t Done, depending on your mood) – has redefined what’s possible on two wheels and firmly established itself as the market-leader in the compact cargo bike category.

Whether you’re beating school-run traffic, delivering goods across town, or heading off on a weekend adventure, this is the bike that proved you don’t need a car to carry serious loads.

Ben & Michael from the Fully Charged Team put the new GSD Gen 3 through its paces and talk through everything that’s new. You can watch the full review below, or keep reading for a deep dive into the standout updates.

What’s New in the Tern GSD Gen3?

Tern has taken the Gen 2’s already rock-solid platform and added a series of considered upgrades that make everyday riding smoother, safer and even more practical:

  • Smart Security & Connectivity – Bosch Smart System brings GPS tracking, alarm, digital locking, and new battery immobilisation tech.
  • Upgraded Braking – Bosch ABS now available on select models for better, safer stopping power.
  • Better Lighting – A brighter Ignis Headlight and always-on RearStop Brake Light keep you visible day and night.
  • Built to Carry, Built to Last – Reinforced Atlas G Rack, Lockstand and VLT Seatpost support heavier loads without the flex.
  • More Muscle – Max gross weight now 210kg, with the rear rack supporting up to 100kg.
  • Charge As You Go – USB-C port (on select models) to keep your phone or kit topped up en route.

Still a Compact Cargo eBike – But Built to Do More

Yes, it’s still compact. Still easy to store, still nimble enough to navigate city streets. But the Gen 3 has more muscle underneath the hood.

The upgraded Atlas Lockstand now locks remotely, making loading and unloading even easier. And with the Bosch Cargo Line motor delivering 85Nm of torque, hills feel flat, even when you’re fully loaded with little passengers, parcels or picnic gear.

Smarter Than Ever

The Gen 3’s digital brain comes courtesy of the Bosch Smart System. Here you’ll find a full suite of connected features: GPS tracking, motion alarm, electronic locking and Bosch ABS for added control.

And new for 2025 – Battery Lock. This feature digitally pairs your battery with your bike, meaning if it’s stolen, it won’t work anywhere else. It’s clever, and it’s a huge step forward in eBike security.

One Size, All Sorted

The GSD’s one-size-fits-most frame means it adapts easily to riders from 4’11” to 6’7”. One bike, many users – whether it’s a family sharing the load or a business running a delivery fleet.

And when the ride is done? It stands vertically to save space. It’s flat-friendly. Hallway-ready. Urban-approved.

Safety, Certified

The Gen 3 doesn’t just feel more secure – it is. It meets DIN79010 cargo bike safety standards and is UL2849-certified for electrical safety, giving you confidence in the Bosch motor and battery system powering your ride.

Final Thoughts: The Tern GSD Gen 3, Only Smarter

The Tern GSD Gen3 is a masterclass in refinement. It doesn’t scream for attention – it just works. Silently, skilfully, and reliably, day in, day out.

If the Gen2 was the bike that helped people get stuff done, the Gen3 is the bike that helps you do even more – with less effort, more smarts, and better security.

The first bikes are due towards the end of May, and starting from £5900. Get in touch to reserve yours now!

And don’t worry – the ever-popular GSD Gen2 isn’t going anywhere. It continues alongside the Gen 3 for those who prefer a simpler setup.
