We often hear people say they only ride in the warmer seasons and will be more likely to use the car if there’s a chance of wet weather. Personally, I enjoy riding all year round, and one of the myriad benefits of e-bikes is that you can wear warm and waterproof clothing that isn’t necessarily bike-specific, allowing you to arrive toasty, dry, and perspiration-free.
While riding in the rain can be enjoyable, there are essential considerations to ensure your experience is as safe as possible.
eBike Braking Techniques
Leaving more space to the vehicle in front will improve your visibility, especially where there’s spray, and will give you more room to brake safely. When braking on a wet road, apply pressure to the brake levers smoothly and progressively, maintaining an even load on the front and rear.
The rear brake should be applied slightly before the front, but be attentive to any loss of grip and gently adjust pressure accordingly. Expect slightly reduced braking performance in wet conditions.
eBike Tyre Maintenance
Modern tyres on eBikes are generally wider with a larger contact area, providing excellent wet weather performance. However, since tyres are your primary connection to the road, it’s crucial to ensure they are correctly inflated and not overly worn.
Be cautious of manhole and drain covers, which tend to be more slippery when wet and are often raised or sunken. Look out for tell-tale rainbow colours on the road surface—these likely indicate oil or diesel, which should be avoided. Always steer around standing water, as you won’t know how deep that puddle is.
Cornering Safely
In addition to braking more gently in the rain, remember to corner conservatively. Approach bends by getting all your braking done in a straight line.
This allows for a smooth transition into the corner at a safe speed, enabling you to navigate securely to the apex and gently accelerate from there. In other words, avoid braking and turning at the same time.
Choosing the Right Equipment
Good waterproof clothing will greatly increase your comfort, which also translates to safety. You’ll ride better if you’re comfortable and dry. Opt for footwear that maintains a good grip on your pedals.
If you wear glasses for distance vision correction, consider switching to contact lenses to avoid rain-covered specs. Visibility is key, so always ride with lights on and, ideally, wear reflective clothing.
Embracing Year-Round Riding
If you’re riding an eBike, you’re already doing your part for the planet. The reality of climate change has recently brought some of the wettest months on record, but don’t let that dampen your enthusiasm for riding your e-bike. With the right clothing and a smooth riding style, some of your best adventures could be just around the corner.
